Editing Video

In “The Bare Bones Camera Course for Film and Video,” located at https://www.amazon.com/dp/1621535266/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_cQuTAb86EQMY6, Tom Schroeppel offers tips to editing in chapter 10.

1. Use an establishing shot to show your audience where everything is within the first few shots. Re-establish often with a wide shot. Narration or dialogue can also be used so the audience knows where they are. If an audience is wondering where they are, then the message is not being considered.

2. Do not move the camera unless there is a reason to move it.

3. Give your audience time to absorb new sounds and images unless it is a dramatic program.

Montage Reviews

A montage is a sequence of connected shots. They can be used to reduce time or distance, sum up information, or set an atmosphere.

Menace II Society

Menace II Society is a ‘hood classic about a drug dealer named Caine, played by Tyrin Turner, who tries to leave his criminal life behind and move down south with his girlfriend Ronnie, played by Jada Pinkett-Smith, and her son. However, a few minutes before they leave, Caine is shot in a drive-by shooting by someone he beat up a few weeks earlier.

The death scene can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2P7cb5pGsU.  I thought that the montage was compelling with Caine’s life flashing before his eyes. There were a lot of close-ups of him beating up the guy, of the guy hitting the ground while being beaten up, of him kissing his girlfriend Ronnie that he will leave behind, and of the person shooting him in the drive-by. His monologue was well written with him stating that he knew that he would have to eventually pay for beating up the guy. The fades to black and the heartbeats were perfect touches.
